A US drone attack targeting a militant compound has killed eight insurgents in a troubled Pakistani tribal region.

Two missiles hit the compound located in Tappi on Wednesday, 10km southeast of Miranshah, the main town in volatile North Waziristan near the Afghan border, a military official in Peshawar said.

The identities of those killed in the attack are unknown. But the area is dominated by Hafiz Gul Bahadur, a prominent militant commander who has focused on fighting foreign troops in Afghanistan.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity.
