It's been revealed Tiger Woods' wife used a golf club to smash out the back window to help get the golf champion out of his crashed car in Florida.

Elin Nordegren has told police she was in the house when she heard the accident and came outside.

Officers found Woods lying in the street with his wife hovering over him.

The world's number one player hit a fire hydrant and part of a tree and was in and out of consciousness when police arrived.

Woods has been released from hospital after being treated for facial cuts.

The accident happened after he pulled out of his driveway at 2:25am (local time), authorities said.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Woods started driving along the road when his car struck a fire hydrant and then hit a tree.

Woods, 33, was taken to Health Central Hospital in Ocoee following the incident.

Early reports said the star had been seriously injured in the crash.

But later it emerged he had only suffered cuts to his face and was released from hospital after treatment, said a local mayor.

Woods' office confirmed the golfer had left hospital.

A statement said: 'He was admitted, treated and released in good condition' after being in a 'minor' car crash.

The highway patrol said the crash was still under investigation, and charges were pending.

But it added that the crash was not alcohol-related.

The airbags in the car did not deploy during the incident outside Woods' home, according to the Orlando Sentinel newspaper.

Airbags typically do not deploy if a vehicle is travelling at less than 33mph, it said.

Woods is one of the world's richest athletes, a leading force in sports marketing and the biggest draw on the PGA tour.

Woods made a triumphant comeback on the tour this year after missing much of the 2008 season following reconstructive knee surgery.

He was operated on shortly after clinching his 14th major title, the 2008 US Open.

He did not win a major title this year but had a successful year capped by winning the season-long FedEx Cup.

Woods's website said he is due to start the campaign for his fifth Chevron World Challenge title on Tuesday.

Woods, the tournament's host, won the event in 2001, 2004, 2006 and 2007 but missed last year's competition while recovering from the knee surgery.
