Hundreds of Liberal party supporters have gathered in Sydney's west to hear Opposition Leader Tony Abbott address a federal campaign rally.

Around 300 people, many wearing blue Liberal Party T-shirts, filled Auburn's basketball centre on Sunday ahead of Mr Abbott's appearance.

The centre has been transformed for the event, with large billboards emblazoned with the slogan 'Hope. Reward. Opportunity.' and a giant Australian flag on one wall.

Mr Abbott is launching the coalition's mini-election campaign in Sydney with the speech and a series of television advertisements.

The coalition's campaign blueprint, Our Plan: Real Solutions for all Australians, pledges cuts to the public service, and to build a 'five pillar economy' by boosting manufacturing, agriculture exports, advanced services, education and mining.

In the document, the coalition has dumped references in previous documents to deliver a surplus 'within 12 months'.
