A shark continues to roam a Sydney beach after a lifeguard had a 30cm chunk taken out of his surfboard.

Dee Why and Long Reef beaches in Sydney's north remain closed after off-duty Warringah Council lifeguard Danny Sheather was knocked off his board.

He was surfing about 100m from the south end of Dee Why beach around 11.50am (AEDT) this morning when the the shark shouldered him off his board.

He says he didn't see the predator but noticed a 30cm chunk missing from one side of his board.

Mr Sheather then paddled in and raised the alarm.

Surf Life Saving NSW says rescue helicopters are keeping an eye on a 2.5m shark near Dee Why beach.
