A man believed to be in his 60s has died after a collision southeast of Melbourne, pushing the national holiday road toll to eight.

Police believe a car pulled out of a service lane at the intersection of Quinn Street and the Princes Highway and was hit by a ute about 8.30pm (AEDT) on Monday.

The driver of the car, a man believed to be in his 60s, was taken to Dandenong Hospital where he later died, police said.

The driver of the ute, a 27-year-old man, escaped unhurt.

Monday's death takes the state holiday road toll to four.

The national road toll period runs from 0001 December 23, 2012 until 2359 January 3, 2013, local times, in line with the Australia New Zealand Policing Advisory Board.
