A man who slashed his girlfriend's upper thigh with a box cutter on a night out in a Sydney a hot spot was aiming at a sergeant, police say.
The sergeant and a constable were patrolling a party strip in Kings Cross on Friday night when they were alerted to a man acting suspiciously inside a nearby club.
The officers went inside to investigate shortly before midnight (AEDT) and spoke with a 45-year-old man.
Police say the man attempted to flee before producing a box cutter and swinging out at the sergeant.
The man's 27-year-old girlfriend reportedly became involved and suffered a slash wound to her upper right thigh.
The knife-wielding man was disarmed and held down until officers from the riot squad arrived to break down a door and take the man into custody.
The woman, from Queanbeyan, was treated at St Vincent's Hospital.
The man has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm and resisting arrest, and will appear via video link in Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday.
