A woman has been shot dead after an altercation in the middle of a Melbourne street.

A man was taken into police custody without a struggle shortly after the shooting in West Footscray on Monday afternoon.

Police say the man, from West Footscray, and the woman pulled up in separate cars in Clive Street and shots were fired after they got out of their vehicles.

It is believed the man and the woman, who suffered gunshot wounds to her body, were known to each other.

'Somehow both parties have come to be in this street. There's been an altercation. A firearm has been produced and shots have been fired which resulted in a female dying,' Senior Sergeant Stephen McIntyre told reporters at the scene.

A third man is assisting police with their inquiries.

Residents in the street heard an argument around 2.30pm, followed by gunshots.

'I heard gunshots going off ... just went bang, bang, bang,' one resident told the Nine Network.

Another resident said: 'There was arguing going on up and down the street, people in cars, and then they heard a shot and then about half an hour later there was another four shots and then the cops came,' he told Network Ten.
