The national death toll of people infected with swine flu has risen to 11.

New South Wales chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant says a 57-year-old man was diagnosed with the virus on Friday, and died on the same day at Westmead Hospital, in Sydney's west.

Health authorities say the man, who had serious medical problems including diabetes, is the second person to die in NSW after contracting the virus, and the 11th nationally.

Dr Chant says in a statement there are currently eight people in intensive care in NSW who have swine flu, six men and two women aged from 18 to 49, five of whom have underlying risk factors including asthma, obesity, diabetes and chronic lung disease.

The number of confirmed swine flu cases in NSW has more than doubled to 1,375 in the past fortnight.
