Federal police allege a South African woman swallowed almost half a kilogram of heroin and tried to smuggle it into Australia.

The 32-year-old woman was stopped at Sydney airport on Friday and taken to hospital for a medical examination, after authorities became suspicious when she arrived on a flight from Johannesburg.

The AFP allege the woman was concealing drugs internally and later passed 124 pellets containing about 496 grams of heroin.

She's been remanded in custody to appear at Sydney's Central Local Court on Tuesday.

If convicted, she faces a maximum penalty of 25 years imprisonment and/or a $550,000 fine.
