Sailors on the HMAS Success have been disciplined and sent home, after allegedly plotting a challenge to have sex with as many female crewmates as possible.

The Seven Network reports the sailors detailed their plot in a document called 'The Ledger', where dollar values were placed on each woman's head while overseas during May.

Larger amounts were offered if the sailors could sleep with a female officer or a lesbian, and sailors challenged each other to have sex in various locations, including on top of a pool table.

The arrangement was discovered while the HMAS Success was visiting Singapore, where the captain ordered the sailors immediately return home to Australia after they were formally interviewed.

The Defence Department has launched a formal inquiry into the incident and has confirmed several of the sailors from the Success returned to Australia in May.

But it says it hasn't yet determined whether the allegations are true.

The Navy has warned all of its staff to treat others fairly and says any form of unacceptable behaviour will be dealt with.
