Senior Labor MP Brendan O'Connor has described Kevin Rudd's surprise resignation as 'a look at me moment'.

Human Services Minister Brendan O'Connor has described Kevin Rudd's surprise resignation as foreign minister while in the United States as 'a look at me moment'.

Mr O'Connor said the resignation, however, was a circuit breaker and a chance for the Labor to get on with business.

'What we saw today was a typical look at me' moment by the foreign minister in resigning overseas and not notifying the prime minister that he was to resign,' Mr O'Connor told the Nine Network.

He was confident Prime Minister Julia Gillard would win any leadership ballot 'overwhelmingly' with the full support of her ministry and overwhelming support in the caucus.

'It does provide an opportunity for us to clear the air and remove these distractions and explain to the Australian people the reforms we are undertaking,' Mr O'Connor said.

'This is a circuit breaker and provides the opportunity for the government to focus on things that matter to every Australian and to stop being distracted by this soap opera.'
