Premier Anna Bligh has sent Queensland's best wishes to Australian journalist Nigel Brennan following his release from 15-months in captivity after being kidnapped in Somalia.

Mr Brennan and Canadian journalist Amanda Lindhout were released on Wednesday after their families reportedly paid a ransom of $US1 million ($A1.09 million) to the kidnappers, although authorities will not confirm that.

Ms Bligh on Thursday began state parliament by announcing that Mr Brennan, who was from Bundaberg, had been release.

'Mr Brennan has revealed that he had been pistol whipped and locked in chains for the past 10 months after a failed escape attempt,' she said.

Ms Bligh said the community was behind him and his family.

'I'm sure that all Queenslanders would join me in offering our heart-felt goodwill to Mr Brennan and his entire family,' she said.
