A dog owner in China has taught his furry friend basic arithmetic, Chinese state television reports.

Appearing on CCTV, owner Lu Zesheng demonstrated how his two-year-old dog, Potato, can add, subtract, multiply and divide.

Lu, from eastern Jiangsu province, asks the genius canine a mathematical question and Potato answers with a series of barks corresponding to numbers.

'How many digits does 10 million have?', Lu asks.

Eight barks are answered by Potato, meaning eight digits.

A harder question is posed, 'How much is 3.44 plus 3.56?'

Seven barks is the answer.

CCTV said Potato is even able to remember the mobile phone numbers and ages of neighbours.
