The mystery of a grapefruit-sized eyeball that washed up on a beach in the US may have been solved.

Scientists were baffled after a big blue eyeball was found by local man Gino Covacci on Pompano Beach, north of Fort Lauderdale, on Wednesday.

But wildlife officials now believe the giant eye may belong to a swordfish.

'Experts on site and remotely have viewed and analyzed the eye, and based on its color, size and structure, along with the presence of bone around it, we believe the eye came from a swordfish,' said Joan Herrera, the curator of collections at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservatory Commission in a statement.

The eye had been sent to a research lab in St Petersburg, with a photo shared the their Facebook page.

There were a range of theories floating over the eye - including the notion that it came from a giant squid or Bigfoot.
