Nearly 80 turtles have been saved after Chinese customs officers discovered them inside a cardboard box from Japan.

The turtles had been wrapped in bandages and stockings before being piled into the container and put on a plane to Shanghai.

The pond turtles are common in Japan, and often kept as pets.

Rare and unusual pets from overseas are becoming increasingly popular in China, resulting in a booming illegal import industry.
