Prince William's girlfriend, Kate Middleton, was distraught when she had to confess her pet dog had eaten a pair of antique pearl earrings he gave her as a birthday present.

But the British royal offered some practical advice - wait for them to come out the other end.

'Kate can see the funny side now, but at the time she was really upset,' an un-named friend told The Mail on Sunday.

'She knew William had spent a lot of money on the earrings and she was embarrassed that she had mislaid them.

'When she told William she suspected Otto had eaten them, he burst out laughing and told her that she would have to wait for them to come out the other end.'

William presented Kate with the earrings for her 28th birthday in January, shortly before he left on his whirlwind tour of New Zealand and Australia.

But she apparently flew into a panic when she discovered they had vanished from her bedside table and all evidence pointed to her cocker spaniel, Otto, who was sitting nearby licking his paws.

She took William's advice and waited, but when the inevitable happened, the earrings were beyond repair.

'When the earrings finally emerged, she realised that there was no rescuing them, they were so badly damaged and chewed up,' the friend said.

'She had to call William and tell him the news. He told her not to worry and that he would get her another pair. He said the main thing was that Otto was OK. He adores the dog, who's very sweet.'
