Victoria is set to experience some of its worst fire conditions since Black Saturday with hot windy weather predicted for the state on Friday.

Most of the state will experience temperatures above 40 degrees, with fresh northerly winds also expected.

In Victoria's north-west, Mildura is tipped to have six days in a row above 40 degrees.

Country Fire Authority state duty officer Brett Boatman says abundant growth in the dry grasslands and drying forests mean there will be a very high fire danger.

He says it's likely there'll be total fire bans, but doesn't expect a code red day to be declared.
