Australian troops in Afghanistan have started shipping back millions of dollars worth of military equipment as some operations begin to fold.

The non-essential gear is being sent back to Australia as one and half thousand military personnel prepare to come home.

The majority of serving troops are expected to be back in Australia by the end of next year.

Defence officials are hoping to send valuable equipment back before air and road routes becomes congested, as other allied forces also begin withdrawing.
