A Gold Coast man who allegedly beheaded a woman's dog and tried to kill a harbour master who came to her aid has been remanded in custody for psychological assessment.
Bradley Mark Weir, 42, made no application for bail on Monday when he faced Southport Magistrates Court on several charges, including attempted murder and animal cruelty.
After exchanging tearful smiles with his sister, he sat quietly in the dock holding his head in his hands throughout the proceedings.
Duty lawyer Tim Clements told the court Weir had been assessed by mental health officials and would make no application for bail.
Magistrate Brian Kilmartin said it was clear from a preliminary report that Weir was showing "considerable symptoms of a mental illness requiring voluntary treatment".
Police will allege Weir, who lives at Hope Harbour Marina, beheaded a neighbour's poodle and stabbed the harbour master when he tried to come to the woman's assistance.
Weir was remanded in custody until February 27.
