Two escape from prison in Hobart

Two prisoners with a history of violence remain on the loose after breaking out of Hobart's Risdon Prison.

In the third escape from the jail in two years, Kyle Leslie Lynch, 19, and James Peter Sampson, 21, broke out about 7.30pm (AEDT) on Saturday.

Police have warned the public not to approach the escapees if spotted but to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 00.

Inspector George Cretu said police were hopeful of catching the pair and returning them to custody.

He said it was unknown at this stage how the prisoners escaped and it was believed they were unarmed.

'They've got a history of crime and violence ... so they should be treated with caution,' Insp Cretu told AAP.

Lynch is 175 centimetres tall, with a slim build, short brown hair and blue eyes. He has a tattoo of a star under his left eye.

Sampson has a slim build and is 180cm tall, with short brown hair and brown eyes. He has an incomplete tribal tattoo on his right forearm and another of a piston and two dice on his left forearm.

Both men were wearing white T-shirts and either khaki or green work pants when last seen.
