Fire and emergency crews are continuing to monitor a leaking petrol tank at the Mobil oil refinery in Melbourne's west, which is threatening to collapse, contaminating wetlands that flow directly into Port Phillip Bay with millions of litres of fuel.
The Metropolitan Fire Brigade's Commander Trevor Woodward says the massive tank began leaking 3.5 million litres of petrol just before midnight (AEDT), and they're not likely to finish removing it until lunch time.
Around 14 fire trucks and more than 70 firefighters and emergency services personnel are at the Altona plant, which has been blanketed with foam.
While there's no housing nearby, the refinery is surrounded by wetlands, with Kororoit Creek on the refinery's southern boundary flowing directly into Port Phillip Bay.
