Employees are being urged to put their lives ahead of work and clock off on time to combat a culture of long hours.
Unions NSW is calling for all workers to take a stand against unpaid overtime on Wednesday for Go Home on Time Day.
'Today's event is an important symbol of how Australians feel about the ever-growing burden of unpaid hours,' Unions NSW secretary Mark Lennon said.
'Australians work some of the longest hours in the developed world and it takes a terrible toll on family relationships, health and general community wellbeing.'
Go Home On Time Day is an initiative of thinktank The Australia Institute.
The day of action comes after a report by the institute, Something for Nothing, which found the typical full time employee in Australia works 70 minutes of unpaid overtime a day.
That adds up to about 2.14 billion of unpaid hours every year, or 'a $72 billion gift to employers', the institute says.
'Today's action is important, but we shouldn't see this as a one off,' Mr Lennon said.
