A woman motorcycle passenger has been killed after falling from the bike and being hit by a car in far-north Queensland, police say.

The motorcycle, controlled by a 54-year-old man, was in a group of four bikes riding in a slow lane of traffic on the Kennedy Highway near Mareeba about 3.58pm (AEST) on Sunday.

When a Toyota Landcruiser utility in front of them indicated to turn right into Shroj Road, the bike braked heavily and veered to the other side of the highway.

The motorcycle dropped and the rider and 52-year-old woman pillion passenger came to rest in the middle of Shroj Road.

The ute hit the woman as it completed its turn.

The ute driver assisted the woman, and a police officer who came across the crash performed CPR until ambulance officers arrived.

The woman was pronounced dead in hospital a short time later, while the rider suffered a broken hand and a gash to his head.

Investigations continue.
