The body of a fisherman has been found after he went missing when his boat capsized in central NSW.

The 76-year-old man and two friends were fishing from a boat on the Macquarie River between Dubbo and Geurie on Saturday afternoon when it capsized and all three were thrown into the water.

The two friends made it to shore and witnesses tried to rescue the man but were unsuccessful, police said.

Police divers recovered his body just after midday on Sunday.
