A Victorian couple has been winched to safety from their yacht which ran aground on rocks near East Kangaroo Island in Bass Strait.

The couple set off a distress beacon after hitting rocks near the northern point of the island, off Tasmania's north coast, about 3.15am (AEDT) on Monday.

A Tasmania Police helicopter was used to winch the man and woman, both 66, to safety and they were taken to a nearby hospital suffering from hypothermia.

High winds and waves prevented police from salvaging the vessel.
