A replica gun has been found by police investigating a shooting at a school in southwest Sydney.

A bullet hole was found in a window of a school building at West Street, Lurnea on Wednesday morning.

Police believe the shot was fired at the school between Monday 7pm and Tuesday 8am.

There may have been a second bullet hole in another window. However, this was repaired before police were called.

On Thursday, police found a lead fragment from one of the walls within the school then raided a home in Lurnea.

It is alleged police found a metal replica pistol hidden under a mattress in the house.

Police seized the pistol and the investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, NSW Opposition Leader John Robertson said he would hold a crisis meeting with community leaders in southwest Sydney on Friday to discuss the shootings in the area.

'There have been 60 shootings since Barry O'Farrell became Premier - the latest at a school in southwest Sydney,' Mr Robertson said.

'Despite continuing gun violence, week after week, Barry O'Farrell is doing nothing to stop the shootings.

'That's why I've invited members of the community to come together and work out ways to stop the violence in their neighbourhoods.

'If these shootings were happening in (Liberal heartland areas) Kuring-gai or the North Shore, the streets would be crawling with police and the thugs perpetrating these shootings would be locked behind bars.

'Instead, the premier is ignoring the problem - burying his head in the sand, while mums and dads in west and southwest Sydney, go to sleep at night, worrying they will wake up under a hail of bullets.'
