More than 200 people have evacuated their homes at Mitchell as record flooding inundates the small southern inland Queensland town.

The Maranoa River at Mitchell is at 9.3 metres and is still rising, exceeding the previous record peak of 9.26m set in 1956.

A disaster situation was declared on Thursday, however, the Bureau of Meteorology says rain is easing over Mitchell and other parts of Queensland's interior.

More than 200 people left their homes and spent the night at evacuation centres, a spokeswoman from Maranoa Regional Council told AAP.

She said 45 homes have been flooded above the floorboards.

St George is also on flood alert, as the Balonne River swells.

Bungil Creek at Roma is expecting major flood heights of up to 7.5 metres, similar to last April's heights.

Queensland's Department of Community Safety is urging Roma residents to prepare for flooding and to evacuate to higher ground.
