A man was sprayed with boiling hot liquid and suffered serious burns in an industrial accident in Melbourne's

west.

The 41-year-old man suffered burns to the face, neck and hands while trying to unblock a pipe just before 4am at a factory in Laverton North, intensive care paramedic Andrew Lougheed said.

Mr Lougheed said he was standing on a ladder when it appears he slipped and a pressure valve was torn from the pipe.

"The man was sprayed with a liquid called tallow which is a mix of fat and water, heated to 140 degrees," he said.

He was taken to The Alfred hospital in a serious condition.
