Tasmania's southern-most reaches will turn tropical for Australia Day today, in the wardrobe department at least.
Researchers on Macquarie Island, halfway between Australia and Antarctica, will defy temperatures that peak at around six degrees.
Deputy station leader Ashleigh Wilson says the researchers have a tradition of an Australia day swim, which involves donning the brightest shorts and tropical-looking shirts that one can find.
And a cricket match is another tradition, although it is under threat from the expected 30-40 knot winds, while a haggis-throwing competition in honour of Governor Lachlan Macquarie, who gave the island its name, is also planned.
