Darwin is facing Australia Day downpours and gales, with many official events called off due to the wild weather.
The annual Australia Day fun run through central Darwin has been cancelled for the first time in 10 years, after trees were blown over in gusty winds.
Plans for today's ute run, in which enthusiasts decorate their utes and drive them to a greyhound track had to be abandoned after the track flooded.
A flyover by FA-18 jets and a 21 gun salute planned for central Darwin has also been cancelled, together with an Australian rules football match in the Tiwi Islands.
Executive director Katrina Fong Lim of the Northern Territory Australia Day Council says it is the first time such widespread cancellations of Australia Day events in Darwin have been necessary.
To make things worse, a severe weather warning has been issued, with the possibility of flash flooding in the Darwin-Daly and northern Arnhem districts.
