A new website will make it easier for chronically ill people to access drugs being trialled by medical researchers and pharmaceutical companies.
The website, launched by the federal government on Thursday, will also provide information to researchers and the industry about ongoing trials.
Health Minister Tanya Plibersek said apart from giving patients access to the newest drugs, clinical trials also allowed healthy people to be part of the medical research process.
'But most importantly, (this website makes) it much easier for patients to find out whether there is a clinical trial that they may benefit,' she said at the website's launch in Canberra.
Medicines Australia chief executive Brendan Shaw said Australia was facing increasingly stiff competition globally for clinical trial investment.
'Too often we're missing out on that investment to countries in eastern Europe and Asia,' Dr Shaw said.
'Patients who participate in clinical trials get early, and often free, access to new treatments which aren't widely available to the community at large.'
