The stock market in New York has ended the day higher.

Preliminary figures put the Dow Jones Industrial Average UP 6.51 points at 12,890.50 in afternoon trading in New York, while the Standard Poor's 500 index is UP 1.62 points at 1,351.58.

The NASDAQ Composite index is UP 11.37 points at 2,927.23.

The Australian dollar is trading at 107.83 US cents, DOWN from 108.13 at Thursday's close.

The local currency is worth 83.79 Japanese yen, 81.20 euros, 68.20 British pence and 1.2936 New Zealand dollars.

Benchmark crude oil is UP $US1.13 at $US99.84 per barrel.

The Australia market is set to open higher, with the SPI futures index UP five points.

The benchmark SP/ASX200 index shed 7.8 points, or 0.18 per cent, to 4,282.9 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index shed 6.6 points, or 0.15 per cent, to 4,357.1 points.
