Newcrest is expecting the price of gold to remain at elevated levels in coming years.

CEO Greg Robinson telling a business luncheon that gold will trade above US $1,500 an ounce and as high as US $2,500 for the foreseeable future.

While the share price of gold producers has underperformed the precious metal, he says that will even out over time.

But Mr Robinson warned the strong local currency and high labour costs are making Australian mines less competitive.

Despite global financial headwinds, Mr Robinson says project funding is still available for the mining industry.

Newcrest is planning a secondary listing on the Toronto Stock Exchange by March.
