Jetstar Airways is on the lookout for a new head of its Singapore-based operations after announcing Chong Phit Lian would step down in February next year.

Ms Chong has been chief executive of Jetstar Asia for the past six years but was leaving to pursue opportunities outside the aviation sector, Jetstar said in a statement on Thursday.

Jetstar said the search for a Singaporean national to replace Ms Chong was well advanced, with a replacement expected to be announced in early 2012.

Despite stepping down as chief executive, Ms Chong would remain on the Jetstar Asia board, the airline said.

Paul Daff, who previously ran Qantas's New Zealand subsidiary, Jetconnect, would be acting chief executive until a replacement was named.

Qantas Airways owns 49 per cent of Jetstar Asia, with the remaining 51 per cent held by Singaporean businessman Dennis Choo, who has had a long association with the Flying Kangaroo.

Mr Choo is chairman of the Jetstar Asia board.
