There are reports the Beijing Automotive Industry Holding company is angling to lodge a last-minute bid to take over German car-maker Opel.

A source has told Reuters that BAIC is currently working out the final details of the offer before the July 15 deadline.

But German union leaders have accused Opel's parent company General Motors of using BAIC to increase pressure on Magna, the frontrunner for the deal.

The head of Opel's works council told German media GM was playing a high-stakes game to help improve terms of the sale.

He said BAIC had no experience of global automotive production.

A Belgian investment firm has also made an offer.

But it is thought to be effectively out of the race, along with Italian automaker Fiat.
