Swarms of mosquitos have invaded Brisbane in the wake of the 'big wet' and higher than normal tides.

The city's council has launched an all out assault, spraying mosquito breeding hotspots across the region.

Because mosquitos only have a life span of around two weeks, it is important spraying is conducted at the right time, cutting off the breeding pattern.

Residents can help by tipping out water containers around their homes.
