The Australian Greens have taken the gloss off President Barack Obama's plan to spend a day at next month's climate conference in Denmark.

Senator Christine Milne says Mr Obama was going to neighbouring Norway anyway to collect his Nobel peace prize and could hardly avoid going to Copenhagen if he wanted to remain credible on climate change.

Senator Milne says she's disappointed the president will fly in during its first week of the summit and not when other world leaders are there for serious negotiations on a new global pact.

She says it's also disappointing the US is only putting an emissions cut of three to four per cent on 1990 levels on the table.
