Up to 100 construction workers have been stood down from a large apartment building site in Sydney over fears contaminated soils have not been cleared from the area.

The workers were told not to come to the site at Rhodes, in Sydney's west, on Wednesday, a spokesman for the Construction Forestry Mining Energy Union (CFMEU) said.

'We understand that Meriton has shut down work on the site indefinitely,' a CFMEU spokesman told AAP.

'They have in the soil there - there's dust and carcinogens and they've got to get that processed.

'And they haven't been able to get the relevant certificate from the local council.'

He said out of the 700 apartments planned for the site, approximately 300 had already been constructed.

A Meriton spokesman said the details of the situation needed clarification before a statement could be issued.
