The Australian teen TV series SLiDE, created for Foxtel by Playmaker Media, has lost out to a Japanese show at the first-ever International Emmy Kids Awards.

In previous years, the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences presented one award for children's programming at its main International Emmy gala in November.

However this year, Kids Awards were presented in six categories at a ceremony in New York on Friday to recognise outstanding children's TV programming outside the US.

SLiDE, a series about five 17-year-olds and their journey into the world of adulthood, competed against series from Norway and Brazil, but lost to Japan's Junior High School Diaries.

Other awards went to programs from the UK, Argentina, Japan and Norway.
