Kimbra has won the ARIA for Best Female for a second year running.

The New Zealand born, Melbourne-based singer beat bookies favourite Missy Higgins to claim the award.

The category featuring Jessica Mauboy, Washington and Lanie Lane was one of the strongest from the nominations draw.

The award was presented by British comedian Russell Brand, who brought his mum on stage to present an award.

He pointed to her tummy and said: 'I used to live in there. I came out here to be with everyone else.'

Just before receiving her ARIA, Kimbra performed a kooky version of hit Settle Down.

'This means a lot to me and these things are brutal... What a whirlwind year it's been and what an amazing way to top it off to be acknowledged for this record I started making in Melbourne at 17.'
