The thriller about efforts to smuggle Americans out of Iran during the hostage drama of 1979 took $1.490 million at the weekend, according to figures released by the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.
New release Seven Psychopaths, about a struggling screenwriter who accidentally finds himself dealing with the underbelly of Los Angeles when his friend kidnaps the beloved Shih Tzu of a gangster, raked in $671,173 to take out second position.
The comedy Bachelorette, which stars Aussies Rebel Wilson and Isla Fisher, dropped one spot to No.3, taking $600,306 at the Australian box office over the weekend.
French comedy/drama The Intouchables, about a friendship between a wealthy quadriplegic and his charismatic ex-con carer, has risen two spots to No.4, taking in $529,699 and pushing the Liam Neeson action flick Taken 2 to No.5 ($470,685).
End of Watch, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, sits at sixth position in its second week of release.
Crime thriller Alex Cross, another new release, about a detective and forensic psychologist who has to break all the rules when he comes up against a serial killer is at No.7, while Paranormal Activity 4 drops three spots to No.8.
Housos vs Authority drops two spots to take out ninth position while new release The Sessions rounds out the top 10.
