Adele's Rolling in the Deep has won the song of the year at the Grammy Awards.

The British soul singer completed a clean sweep of the six categories in which she was nominated at the annual US music awards show.

'This record is inspired by something that is really normal... just a rubbish relationship,' said the 23-year-old, making her comeback after throat surgery.

'It's been the most life-changing year.'

Adele's hit album 21 won the coveted album of the year award, while the single Rolling in the Deep won record of the year and song of the year.

'Thank you so much. This is ridiculous,' she said, accepting one of her awards.

Paul Epworth co-wrote the hit Rolling in the Deep and also won the song of the year award. He also won the Grammy for producer of the year in the non-classical category.

Accepting an award Adele took to the stage with Epworth, who she called 'the best producer in the world', adding: 'He's wonderful - thank you so, so much, Paul.'

Adele also performed at the Grammy ceremony on Sunday for the first time since having surgery on her vocal cords.

She had to cancel her tour and undergo surgery after persistent throat problems, and has kept a low profile for months.

The singer also won best pop solo performance for Someone Like You.
