The almost silent, black and white French film The Artist dances into Australian cinemas this week.
The film has been a roaring success this awards season, winning the Golden Globe for Best Comedy or Musical film and taking top honours at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
It also won three of the five international accolades presented as part of the inaugural AACTA Awards in Los Angeles over the weekend, and is tipped to win big at the Academy Awards on Feburary 26.
The film has been nominated in ten categories, including Best Picture and Original Screenplay, Best Director, Leading Actor and Supporting Actress.
However, The Artist apparently failed to impress audiences at the Odeon Liverpool One cinema in northwestern England, some of whom asked for their money back because the film had no sound.
London's Daily Telegraph reports Nicola Shearer, 25, went to see a screening of the film at the Odeon and was asked by staff if she was aware the movie was silent.
'Of course I knew it was, and I asked the usher why she wanted to know,' she told the newspaper. 'She then told me some people complained and asked for refunds because there is no sound and the screen is smaller.'
The film's smaller screen size was designed to give it a more authentic, silent movie feel.
A spokesman for the cinema confirmed that it issued some refunds.
'Odeon Liverpool One can confirm it has issued a small number of refunds to guests who were unaware that 'The Artist' was a silent film,' he said.
